Mario Strikers Football Action League

When you start the game, you will be greeted with a limited number of menu options. As with many other Mario sports titles, Mario Strikers: action League apparently follows the same formula for infamous content; bare bones at launch with regular free updates promised to bring players back. A mechanically exciting and sophisticated game, accompanied by excellent animations, makes it easier to ignore, but the lack of variety in modes, characters and customization options is somewhat disappointing. Game developers using DLC as a method to finish an incomplete game instead of providing content that feels like a bonus is a bad business practice, and it’s a shame to see Nintendo following this path with another of their flagship series. That’s not to say that Mario Strikers: action League isn’t a worthy revival. On the contrary, the main gameplay is so entertaining that I wish there were more.

Nintendo has announced that the gameplay of Mario Strikers is set to 5v5, and although this is technically true, the easiest way to explain it is as 4v4 with a non-playable goalkeeper on each team. action League can be played with a total of up to 8 players on a single console, via local wireless communication or over the Internet with an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. If you can’t make a full team of real players, be prepared to take control of several characters, as there are no 1v1, 2v2 or 3V3 options for any of the modes. You might think that the exchange between the characters would be complicated, but after a little practice, the mechanics are quite intuitive. You automatically take control of your team’s character by dribbling the ball. Character exchange is only possible if the other team controls the ball, and if you press L to exchange, you will get the character closest to this opponent.

The goal of Mario Strikers (no pun intended) is almost exactly like football, but without the safety rules. You will have to do everything in your power to throw the ball at the opponent’s goal, even if it means brutally pushing your friends, who have become enemies, todebateds the electric fence around the playing field. There are even item boxes that appear sporadically to create even more chaos, with many legendary Mario power-ups like: bananas, mushrooms, green clams, red clams and bob-ombs, all of which do exactly what you’d expect if you’ve ever played a Mario game (and if you haven’t already, you’ll have to live under two). Toads, yoshis, shy guys and koopas spectators also throw undefeated stars on the field as a redebated for the aggressive behavior of the opposing team. Attacking opponents only to kick when they don’t have the ball is morbidly funny, but to know the existence of the star is to try to get everyone to show a little sportsmanship.

All action League mechanics are incredibly easy to use. The simple control of the characters on the playing field is a lot of fun, as they run, pass, shoot, dodge and compete with opponents, but the adrenaline they get when they finally reach a goal is like nothing else. Every time I went to the net, I was squeezed with my whole body, as I was waiting for the goalkeeper to block my shot or if I would score a very valuable point for my team. If you hold down the fire button, you can perform a stronger kick, and the angle at which you direct the joystick changes the direction of the ball. It is highly recommended that you and everyone you are playing with for the first time take the practice lessons from the main menu, as there are also several combos, perfect moves and expert skills that require a little practice to master them well. If you are playing in fast action mode; the game duration, CPU difficulty and items can be turned on and off like Hyper Strike.

The Super Mario Strikers Super strike, which was later called Mega Strike in Mario Strikers Charged, returns, this time with the nickname “Hyper Strike”.”An electrified strike ball will randomly appear on the field, and if it is activated with a simple touch, all your teammates will have 20 seconds to score a guaranteed goal worth double points. A Hyper Strike can only be used by standing on the opponent’s side on the field with the ball in your hand or with your foot (unless you are playing as a debateio). If you hold down the normal fire button for a fully charged shot, the whole game will run in slow motion and a counter will appear next to your character. Immediately after that, a needle quickly jumps back and forth on the meter, which should quickly stop at the two small blue sections, both surrounded by something orange. The closer you are to the blue, the more likely you are to score a goal, but if you do not stop the needle perfectly in the designated area, the other team will have the opportunity to counter the attack with a short button preparation session. A successful Hyper Strike is all about timing, and as someone obsessed with rhythm games, it didn’t take me long to be successful almost every time. However, it’s still as satisfying as using one last smash in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, that’s a lot.
